Reflections from Participants | Pictures
Building Bridges was the second retreat held by Michigan Disability Rights Coalition to address the intersections between the LBGT community and the disability community. It was held in February 2007 and 13 amazing individuals came together at the Leaven Center in Lyons, Michigan to have the difficult conversations around forming alliances between the two communities.
Reflections from Participants
Participants Learned About Themselves and Each Other
"I learned that I am okay being who I am."
"I learned that as open as I am about my sexual identity, I still struggle with shame and how to address my heterosexual privilege."
"I learned to remember to always acknowledge that there is more to someone or something than I might expect."
Participants Faced Surprises
"I was surprised that people were not being judged, but rather accepted with open arms."
"It was surprising how much alike the LGBT and disability communities are - how much we have in common. I had an idea that we were similar, but it was more than I thought."
"I did not think that this weekend would be so challenging. There were times I had to look in myself and ask who am I."
Participants Described the Experience
"It was so intense, but refreshing at the same time."
"I was blown away by the vulnerability people expressed in the group - sharing things they've never felt comfortable sharing before."
"Mind blowing! I met many people who are different from me, and yet we shared so many common bonds!"
"I had a wonderful time. I learned many things about the disability community and how it intersects with the LBGT community. It was easy to talk, relate, connect with people; it was a safe environment."
